The TT17 Twin Tube Tool Kit is part of Crankbrothers' S.O.S (Save Our Shred) range, designed to tackle common mechanical issues on the trail, while remaining compact and easy to carry on your bike.
Crankbrothers has designed this £114.99 / $119.99 Tool Kit with easy access in mind, packing it with all the essential tools to keep you riding.
The kit includes 17 tools: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 Allen keys with an 8mm adaptor bit, a T25 Torx tool, a flathead screwdriver, a tyre plug tool with two plugs, a tyre lever, a chain tool, spoke wrenches (0, 1, 2), a valve core tool, a CO2 Presta-only compatible head, and a storage tube that fits a 16g or 20g CO2 canister.
The chain breaker is compatible with 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-speed chains and can install connecting pins on 10, 11 and 12-speed chains. It also holds a quick link for any of these chains, secured by magnets.
It’s designed to mount on any standard frame bottle bosses, with the two sides folding out for easy access while still mounted on the frame.
The press of a button releases the tool or CO2 canister via a spring mechanism. The tyre lever is conveniently stored beneath the two tubes.
The test product weighed 250g, 3g heavier than Crankbrothers' stated weight.
We tested these on-bike tool-storage solutions in a plethora of conditions, ranging from hot and dusty days to torrential rain and sloppy trails.
They were tested out on the trail in all conditions and ridden on different terrain to test their stability and suitability for different disciplines of mountain biking.
Where tools were included, they were tested trail-side, with the exception of tubeless-repair equipment and chain breakers, which were tested in the workshop.
This compact kit can handle most trail-side repairs, plus the spring-loaded tube they’re stored in allows for quick and easy access.
The multi-tool is chunkier than others I tested alongside it, which makes it easy to grip and get purchase on.
Most of the tools worked as expected and the 8mm adaptor mostly did the trick, but removing pedals pushed how much leverage could be exerted through the tool to the limit.
The only tool I had a real issue with was the tyre plug prongs, which are wide and blunt, making it hard to get small plugs into the tyre through slits.
Chain quick links are very easy to retrieve and lock securely in place. The full-size tyre lever is sturdy, but only one is included, so you may want to carry a second one with you to make getting tyres off rims a little easier.
The bottle cage boss mounting design poses no risk of frame rub, however mounting the tool can be a little fiddly. During initial fitting, care must be taken to ensure there’s enough clearance to access the tools.
The spring-loaded tools are easy to pop out of the tubes, but be wary because they come out with some speed.
It is very secure and rattle-free, everything fits snuggly in the two tubes and it's a very sleek design that blends well onto the bike, making it a tidy option.
Unfortunately, you can’t attach a pump clip underneath it, so you’re reliant on the CO2 cannister.
Crankbrothers offers many different models in its S.O.S range, so if you want the ability to carry a pump, the BC18 bottle cage kit may be the product for you.
Weighing 250g, it's one of the heavier options I tested – especially once a CO2 canister is added. It's not the cheapest, either.
The TT17 Twin Tube Tool Kit is a sleek, well-designed tool kit that will tackle most common mechanicals out on the trail. It features a good selection of tools that are easy to access and use.
While it may not be one for weight-conscious riders, it’s perfect for sticking on the frame and forgetting about until you need it.
