These are my top picks after decades of DIY.

As Country Living's craft director, I've seen it all when it comes to tools of the trade. I put products to the test on a daily basis, whether I'm carving pumpkins, decorating Easter eggs, or sewing up a project for a photo shoot. With more than 20 years of professional crafting under my belt, it's safe to say I have my favorite items that help me get the job done more easily.

From hot glue guns and scissors to hole punches and glue guns, I've tried them all. Some of my favorites are on sale for Prime Day (October 8-9), and I'm sharing my top-rated picks with our crafty audience. Let's face it: Crafting can be expensive! Whether you're a quilter, a knitter, or a scrapbooker, it seems like there's always a new tool or product to buy.

Amazon's fall sale event is the perfect time to stock. up, whether you're shopping for big-ticket items like furniture or generators, essentials for your pets, or some items to add to your wardrobe.

I pull out the glue gun almost every time I do a craft project. While it doesn't work in every application (it won't stick to soft rubbers, for example) it's definitely the easiest and quickest way to tackle a project. And I am particularly enamored with a cordless glue gun. Say you have a wreath hung on the door that needs a little tweaking, with this cordless glue gun there is no need to drag out the extension cord!

When doing detailed painting work, say on a painted pumpkin, nothing beats a good acrylic paint pen. Once primed, the paint goes on smoothly and evenly. This pack of pens comes with 54 amazing colors so there will more than likely be the color you need.

I like to have multiple pairs of scissors, one pair for fabric and ribbons, one for paper, and another for miscellaneous stuff (pipe cleaners, etc.). So I'm a big fan of this three pack of heavy duty scissors. They are super sharp and have easy grip handles so your hands won't get sore when working on a big project.

This tool is so versatile. It can be used in leather work or in paper crafting. It comes with six different size tips, all of which are incredibly sharp, that can punch through thick leather or paper. And unlike the hole punch you used in grade school, because this one doesn't have an arm that limits the distance from the edge where you can punch, you can make holes in the center of a piece of paper.

Used in tandem with the wide ruler, this tool will help you make quick work of a project that requires a lot of cutting. Typically used for cutting fabric, I also like to use it on paper because it feels safer than an X-acto knife.

This lone and wide ruler (it's 14 inches long by 4 inches wide) makes cutting straight lines super easy. Because it's see-through, you can line up multiple points to insure you are making an accurate cut, plus it has incremental markings (1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, etc) so you have lots of options for sizing. Remember the adage— measure twice, cut once!

I love thread and twine. It can be used in sewing, to make a garland, or to help hold a pom pom together (see above!) and one that is waxed is extra versatile. It sticks to itself so it's great for tying a knot extra tight. It also hold a shape really well so makes the most perfect tiny bows.

I hate to admit it but I don't love to sew. Really, I don't mind sewing..I just don't like setting up the sewing machine. Given that, if I have an easy project that just needs a little mending I will reach for heat activated Stitch Witchery. It's great for hemming clothes or a tablecloth, or applying an appliqué.

I LOVE to make pompoms. Wrapping the yarn around the makers, then trimming and trimming until it's perfectly round. So satisfying! This four pack of pom pom makers allows you to make a variety of sizes from large to small. Time to make a pom pom snowman ornament!

I find myself reaching for an awl rather frequently. Whether it's to create a night sky design on a pumpkin or make small holes in leather to create a custom koozie, this multipurpose tool is super handy and is always within reach.
